Good Commercial Planes For Long Flights
At first I was going to write about how much I hate the Boeing 757 in a commercial/coach configuration. That 3x3 aisle arrangement, the old-fashioned flush toilets, the tiny kitchen and ancient equipment… Seriously that plane sucks.
So what planes do you want to fly on for a 2+ hour trip? There are many options for a long flight out of JFK, LGA, and EWR. You can get especially lucky for popular hub destinations, such as ATL and ORD.
My Tips
- Don’t pick a 757.
- If you have the option between a 767 and a 777, I always take the 777. Every seat on a Triple-7 has in-flight entertainment at your seat.
- Go big.
Big planes:
- Boeing 747, 767, 777
- Airbus A300, A310, A330, A340
Small planes:
- Boeing 727, 737, 757 (technically the 757 is a big plane but I hate it)
- Airbus A320 (and variants- A318, A319, A321)
- anything Embraer (JetBlue uses these)
- anything CRJ (Bombardier regional jets)
I like to fly on the big planes. There are more aisle seats, more bathrooms, and more room to walk about the cabin. Options such as in-flight entertainment, meal service, and business class perks differ for each carrier.
