Manhattan Reader Mail - Questions on Diet
I was wondering if you had any ideas for the kinds of things I should be buying for a higher-protein diet. I am insulin resistant and can’t have a lot of sugar or carbs in any form, even fruits and vegetables. I saw what you wrote about steel-cut oats and was wondering where you buy them? Would Whole Foods have them? Any other foods like that that you would recommend?Casey C from Manhattan
Oats- Oats are low on the glycemic index which helps you maintain healthy glucose levels. I buy my steel-cut oats in bulk from an organic health food store in Hoboken (Basic Food, 201-610-1100, 204 Washington St). Whole Foods in Manhattan definitely sells pre-packaged steel-cut oats. Try Bob’s Red Mill Steel Cut Oats, or McCann’s Irish Oatmeal.
Tuna- You should research the mercury content in tuna and determine an acceptable level that you are comfortable with. (For reference… I eat a can of tuna per day. I think 3 cans/week is perfectly safe for anyone.) Whole Foods sells the best canned tuna called Tongol Tuna. It is only $.99 per can. This is also a very low mercury tuna. I mix my tuna with pineapple cottage cheese.
Salmon- A delicious alternative to tuna. I try to eat a can of salmon every day. Canned salmon and canned tuna are are nice because they take zero preparation. The best canned pink salmon is the Wild Alaskan from Bear & Wolf. Available only at Costco, 6 cans for $9. Check Whole Foods for other brands (MUST be skinless and boneless).
Turkey or Beef- Get a George Foreman grill so you can make burgers. Five and a half minutes cooking from frozen.
For more protein-based diet tips, research the anabolic diet. Here is an article for women who want hard bodies - The Anabolic Diet: It’s a Lifestyle. If you are vegetarian I suggest you read the book Skinny Bitch.
