Rambling Thoughts on My Four Corners Met Tour
- My Four Corners Met Tour (what I have taken to calling it) originally started when my little sister visited NYC in September 2011. We only had 1 hour to “see the Met,” so I quickly ran her through my favorite sights. My friends Charles Forman and Will Hutson also came along.
- The tour is named as such because we literally see all four corners of the museum — from the Fragment of the Face of a Queen (North East), to the Frank Lloyd Wright room (North West), to the new Islamic galleries (South East), finally to the Modern gallery and Spectrum V (South West).
- I officially debuted the Four Corners Met Tour during my 30th Birthday Weekend on December 9th, 2011.
- On December 8th, 2011 (my actual birthday) I paid for a private tour guide to do my tour and tell me about all of the pieces. In hindsight, I probably should have recorded her narrative or taken notes.
- LAST NIGHT I DID MY LAST FOUR CORNERS TOUR. We had 15 people in attendance, all my friends or some friends-of-friends.
- My favorite part about LAST NIGHT was when we went to the Member’s Only bathrooms for a bathroom break (this is a new thing and I will do this on future tours for sure - they are the NICEST bathrooms in the whole museum). Standing outside, waiting for my class to do their business… all the girls came out, but the guys appeared to still be waiting in line in the bathroom. We waited… and waited… finally I said, “WTF? I am going in there to see what’s up.” And I went inside the bathroom and all the guys on my tour were standing in a big circle, passing flasks around! Drinking booze in the Member’s VIP Bathroom at the Met. I honestly teared up a little. I was so happy. Everyone laughed a little and we continued our tour, but THAT MOMENT — “sneaking” up to the bathrooms, then the guys organizing their own camaraderie to do a little drinking… You can make the Met your OWN. We can have fun at the museum.
- Last night I told everyone at the after-party that I am retiring the Four Corners tour. Because people were giving me advice about what to say, how to make it funnier, maybe even scripting it a bit. But that is getting a little too much for me. I want to take it back to the roots and start exploring the museum on my own again.
- What will be the next tour? My friend John Doyle suggested a “Red Tour” where we see all the coolest things in the museum that are the color red. I liked that idea and might give it a try in the coming months.
- I love hanging out at the Met.
