Russian artist Olia Lialina, considered to be one of the early pioneers of internet art, writes this brief & helpful history of the animated gif—a file format that was born before the web, and is loved particularly by artists and nerds, like me.

Geek Confession: In 8th grade I started a website called GIF Animation Station. It turned into what was one of the biggest animated GIF collections on the whole English language internet. The site received hundreds of thousands of hits between 1996 and 2000, when it was accidentally deleted by my ISP.
